Hey Hey Thursday #05 – Thoughts on pre-loved toys

Thoughts on pre-loved toys

I started collecting toys sometime in 2009 and there are a lot of previously released figures that I would like to have. I’ve seen a lot of sellers online but I haven’t really considered buying pre-loved or secondhand figures.

Often described as MISB, MIB, loose, displayed in smoke-free home, etc. these pre-loved items are priced based on their condition. Another factor is if it is a chase/limited item and I guess the edition (or issue?) matters as well.

If ever I’ll buy secondhand toys, I’ll get it from someone who has his or her own website so at least I know something about them and how they take care of their collection. I’ll also ask for a lot of photos so I’ll know what to expect. An honest seller will mention even the tiniest of flaw on what they’re selling.

What are your thoughts on pre-loved figures? Ever tried purchasing one?

I’ve never tried purchasing one before but I wouldn’t mind if I really, really want a figure. I’d probably be like you – get it from someone who actually took good care of the figures and ask pictures from different angles.

    1. xine says:

Yeah, I’d ask for a lot of pictures and it would help too if they have a blog or something.

  2. Fabienne says:

I don’t mind if the figure was used before, even though the price is a bit higher then on their release date.

So far there have been a few figures that I really wanted to have, but unfortunately I just noticed them after they were released.

In most cases I was able to track them down in shops,3 times I bought a used one from people I trusted at least a bit, all 3 arrived in very good condition =)

For the time being I stopped looking for old figures, cause I have everything I really wanted. I will concentrate on new figures ^^

Thanks for sharing your experience Fabienne. ^^
I have a few older figures in my wishlist, I’m not sure if I’ll still hunt for them though.

I’ve bought, and reviewed pre-loved figures before. It’s not so bad when you know the person and they have pictures especially, and recent ones. I’ve made a few blind pre-loved purchases before though and was satisfied, though Ebay is one of the last places I’d buy one. MFC has been alright to me so far. Been thinking about selling a few of my figures as well, but never actually sold any outside of duplicates before.

It’s nice to know you’ve had good experience buying pre-loved figs. Thanks for sharing.

MFC – My Figure Collection? Yeah, I guess you can find a lot of good sellers there.

i approve of pre-loved figures! i have a few and mainly look for affordable deals ^^

when it comes to scaled figures, i would do as you mentioned and ask for photos to be sure of its condition. however with nendos and figmas, i beat them up quite a bit in my stories so that isnt as much of a concern lol

    1. xine says:

Rockleelotus! Nice to see you around. ^^

Good to know you got good deals with your pre-loved figs.

Yup, my Revoltech 7-11 Danboard and Yotsuba Summer DX are secondhand figures. The thing was I really love the toys when it was first released, but I didn’t have any money at that time and then the figure got discontinued. Later on I found someone who wanna let go of his collection (in a reasonable price) and it happens that I got the money to pay for it. Perfect timing if I must say :D I didn’t ask any photos though (very stupid of me) but thankfully everything is in good condition :D

My trick to see an honest seller is from the way he sell his toys, if he gave a clear and bold description about the toy’s condition, you know that he has nothing to hide and indicates his honesty..but still, pictures worth a thousand words :D

    1. xine says:

I agree. It’s good that the pre-loved toys that you got is still in good condition. I’d like to have a Danbo too, the Amazon one, perhaps I’ll start small when purchasing pre-loved items.

Ive never bought second hand, mostly sold mine to others (second hand buyers i guess) havent thought about it but if i did i would really look into them providing photos and look at it with my own eyes to judge wether its good or not ^^

    1. xine says:

Yup, like what h4mster said, pictures are worth a thousand words. ^^

Don’t really mind second hand (or third and fourth hand) toys. Usually I’m buying from collectors I know, many of whom are Mint in Box kind of guys who never opened them anyway. Plus, I’m not really all that worried about a few scratches. I’d rather save a few thousands had get a figure with a small defect than buy new.

Missing accessories or switched/missing/damaged parts is another matter though. I never can let that go. That’s why shopping at Divisoria is so worrisome for me.

    1. xine says:

What types of toys do you buy at Divisoria?

      1. slangards says:

@Xine, DC Universe Classics overruns (extra figures the factory makes to cover any deficit in Mattel’s order due to errors or breakage) mostly, or other Mattel and Hasbro toys. You usually don’t see them with accessories and many have the incorrect parts.

I’ve also bought some knock off Transformers and they’re an even worse proposition. A lot of them are low quality with no quality control at all, so you might bring it home only to find out it’s missing several parts or worse, already broken.

Lately, there are a lot of Gundam, Nendroids, NECA and Play Arts figures, too. Lots of Anime statue knockoffs, but that’s pretty far off-topic I guess.

        1. xine says:

Thanks for the info. I’m just curious if there are good quality toys you can get from there, something that you can actually keep.

  8. Aya says:

Personally I don’t sell any of my items ^^ but I don’t mind buy second hand Toys and Figures I have few used one although I still prefer new ^^ but In some cases better buy used one since too long in boxes also might damaging them and in some cases and some new stuff also might have defect/quality control issues in a way it’s nice buy used one especially with honest seller they will tell the item real condition

    1. xine says:

Yeah, you really have to know more about the seller to avoid problems with your purchase of pre-loved toys.

  9. lol i for one love buying second-hand, especially from japanese shops like mandarake (brick-and-mortar and online)! japanese collectors take great care of their stuff — it’s like buying them new! and the best part is, the prices are slashed from 50 to 70 percent — what a steal! :D

    1. xine says:

      I have yet to try ordering from Mandarake. Do they have artbooks? Any problem with the customs here? ^^;

  10. Nopy says:

I’ve bought a few pre-loved figures and haven’t been disappointed. Figure collectors generally take good care of their collections, so it’s not often I hear about someone getting ripped off.

    1. xine says:

Yeah, buying from fellow collectors could be a safe bet.

  11. Yi says:

I think with second hand figures, it’s always a gamble. You never know exactly what the quality is like until you get it. Personally, I’ve had some bad experiences with second hand stuff, so I usually don’t buy them anymore.

    1. xine says:

Sorry to hear that you had bad experiences with your purchases. I guess you really have to be careful when buying second hand figures especially if you don’t know anything about the seller.
