Hey Hey Thursday #02 – Are you a completist?

Alter Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls

Those figure companies sure know how to tempt us with their latest and greatest version of figs, right? The question is do you give in and have that completist compulsion drain your wallets?

Most toy collectors have money allotted for their hobby, of course there are those lucky ones with more money to burn. But was there ever a time that you wanted a toy oh so badly to complete a series or a line that you dip those fingers into your savings because you have already exceeded your budget? If I were still single and younger and don’t know any better, I guess I would have. ^^; I’m suppressing the completist in me because of budget constraints but if I had the means, I’ll probably buy the entire Vocaloid series faster than you can say Hatsune Miku Nendoroid.

Nendoroid Hatsune Miku

I also wanted to buy all the Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls but I missed out on Sanada Yukimura and Senhime (which I really regret) but I lost interest in the upcoming figures except for Naoe which I PO’d already. I think the only set that I completed was the school uniform version of the K-On! Nendoroid, oh wait, I don’t have Ui so yeah I haven’t completed anything. Lol. I have this thing though that I want to get at least two of my favorite characters from the same series for display purposes. You wouldn’t want to have one odd and lonely figure in your display shelf now, would you? Well at least, that’s just how I feel about it. ^^;

So, if you have just one chance to complete a set of figures, which series would you choose and why? Don’t forget to insert world peace to your answer, okay? Lol.

    No, I never felt the urge to complete a set, I only pick figures I really like because of their look and I don’t care if there are more figures from that line except they look like a must have for me.

    Most of this so called lineup sets doesn’t look like they should be placed together, like the Samurai Girls. Albeit they look all nice on their own, to me there is no connection between them aside from the origin.

    Maybe I would buy figures from the same line,if they were more connected to each other, for example two figures in an interacting pose.

    anyway most likely I will add Naoe to my Hattori figure because she looks really nice ^^

      I think the Samurai Girls look really nice together because they all have wonderful outfits and awesome weapons but I agree that they are all nice on their own as well. I just love seeing many characters from one series beautifully displayed together. Another example are the K-On! girls. If I’d get a Mio, I’ll probably get at least one more fig to place beside her ^^;

      Naoe is quite irresistible, isn’t she?

    Great post Xine! For me I don’t feel the need to complete a particular line of toys. I am selective of what I buy, even more so now that I have a family to feed haha :P

      Chubs! I can sooo relate to that hahahaa. Those cute babies could drain wallets too, right? Lol.

    Ah, the completist compulsion. I’ve always had that (which results in my ever exponentially expanding list of wants) but I’ve never really got to practice it much because of budget constraints. So far, the complete sets I have is a set of K-on! Banpresto Prize figs and the FMA Deformaniac figs also from Banpresto. I’ve also wanted to complete the K-on! nendos but that’s kind of impossible because of the WonFes exclusives =_=; I’m hoping to complete the Madoka nendos and the BRS nendos (halfway through the BRS ones!) since I love them and the nendos are just so adorable. ;A; I want to complete Touhou nendos but I’m so behind I doubt that will happen. T_T;

    If I had enough money, I would probably buy nendos, nendos and more nendos and attempt to complete all of them XD

    1. xine says:

      Whew, quite a number of nendos in just one paragraph. Lol. They’re like super cute little monsters who suck the life out of our wallets. Haha.
      Well good luck in completing your favorite nendo sets. I hope to see photos on your blog someday soon! ^^

  4. Aya says:

    Nope won’t have enough money and space for that espesially if it’s juts new charcters/toys/figurines that i just know “yesterday”, and as matter of fact no matter how I try to be completist those figures manufacturer never actually make them all +_+;

    1. xine says:

      Yeah, it’s usually space and money issues. So you want to have a complete line up of the characters from one series? Which series would that be?

      1. Aya says:

        most likely it would be Rozen maiden ^^

  5. BioToxic says:

    Sometimes I’m roped into the completionist mentality with figures. It’s easier to get into that mind set with figma and nendos since they’re relatively cheap and small. For example just having one of the K-ON girls in figma form would look so lonely without at least one of the other band members, and by then you end up wanting the whole band.

    The closest I’ve come to owning a complete set is Max Factorys’ Shining Wind swimsuit line-up. If Clalaclan was more appealing I would have completed it.

    If I had unlimited monies and space I’d like to have a complete MegaHouse Queen’s Blade scale figure collection. But since there’s missing characters *cough* Irma *cough* it still wouldn’t be a complete set in the end.

    1. xine says:

      Your example about the K-On girls are my thoughts exactly. Lol.

      Shining Wind characters are so pretty, but I’d prefer them with their original costumes for a bit more flair.

      Oh, so not all Queen’s Blade characters have their own figure versions? Not really a QB fan but I love their outfits and their pretty faces. I’m still not ready for castoffable figs though ^^;

  6. Hoshiko says:

    Ahh..this one. I once thought of completing my K-ON Nendoroid collection, but after calculating the amount I’d to spend I decided against it. In the end, I got the Nendoroid Petite set as my consolation. They’re cute either way >.<.

  7. h4mster says:

    Nope, since the very beginning I jump into this hobby, I already know that I won’t become a completionist LoL
    When I was still in college I had no money to do it. But now that I already got a job, I got more responsibility that needs some money :D

    1. xine says:

      I guess we you grow older, the responsibilities get bigger and costlier. Haha.

  8. Nopy says:

    I only have 2 complete sets (the first Haruhi figures by Max Factory, and the Touhou nendoroids), so I don’t think I’m a completist. Unless I like all of the characters/figures, I’ll only buy the ones I think are worth the price.

    1. xine says:

      Are you planning to complete the Shining Hearts set? They sure are lovely. ^^
